MIPIM – myths, facts and realities

Networking in the City member Ian Powell advised delegates at the Liverpool Curry Club on April 5th on the dos and donts of attending MIPIM.

Ian, who is head of group business development at construction and building services company Pinington, had just returned from his 13th year at the Cannes event.

His 10-minute talk to a slideshow by construction photographer and MIPIM regular Beccy Lane of Positive Image Photography explained why he thinks MIPIM is still the property show of choice even in today’s harsh economic climate.

The myths about MIPIM, as far as Ian was concerned, were:

  • It’s one big booze up
  • The weather can be iffy
  • It’s expensive
  • People are difficult to meet
  • You don’t really get any business from it
  • It’s a holiday, not work
  • Only the good and great attend
  • Its popularity limits accommodation and travel opportunities

The benefits of attending were:

  • Investors can identify the most promising global investment opportunities form 90 countries
  • You can outline your needs to interested developers and local authorities looking for investment and partners
  • You can discover new market trends, profitable strategies and cutting-edge innovations
  • You can find new contacts and assess high-potential ventures
  • You can conduct business effectively with more than 19,000 industry leaders from 6,000+ companies in one place at one time

Who attends:

  • 19,000 participants (+8% over 2010)
  • 6,400 companies
  • 1,850 exhibiting companies
  • 17,500m² exhibition surface
  • 90 countries (+11% over 2010)
  • 4,031 investors and financial institutions (+6% over 2010)
  • 166 hotel groups
  • 243 corporate end-users
  • 407 cities/local authorities

Ian’s key rules of engagement were:

  • Research – identify who is going to be there that you need to see and buy into the event from the moment go. Following up afterwards is as important as ever
  • Expenditure – MIPIM can be done cheaply. A non-delegate could probably do it for between £1,500 to £2,000 including travel, accommodation (figures based on a minimum four-night stay) and expenses of £150 per day. Delegates typically spend £3,500 including £1,200 for the badge, four nights’ accommodation, travel and expenses of £100 per day. Corporate delegates only require expenses of £100 per day.
  • Options on travel and accommodation – book accommodation as soon as the event is finished and travel a few months in advance to access the cheapest air fares.
  • Attire – typical business wear , not shorts and sandals
  • Plan your diary – to make best use of your time and avoid over-stretching yourself
  • Invitations, appointments, selectivity – honour engagements rather than opting at the last minute for the most promising function
  • Venues – anything from the main exhibition venue, The Bunker, to bars, restaurants, gin palaces on pontoons, boats moored out in the bay, gites and chateaus
  • Pace – a typical 17-hour day could comprise meetings over breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktail parties and shows, with delegates sometimes only getting three hours sleep a night

A new business networking group aimed at construction, property and finance professionals in Shropshire, is set to launch this spring – with a spicy difference!

The inaugural meeting of Networking In The City’s (NITC) monthly Curry Club will take place at the Panacea restaurant in Shrewsbury town centre on Wednesday 09 May.

Curry Club, which celebrated its 33rd birthday last week, was originally established in Manchester as a property and finance networking event. MD Steve Kettle, who took over six years ago, is now rolling out the format nationwide.

He said:  “We saw a niche to make Curry Club a national, industry-specific network for construction, property and finance professionals. Its successful launch and on-going success in Manchester has led to the expansion of the business model across the UK, with Shropshire now on the list. Each event is held in a relaxed, informal atmosphere, at a prestigious curry house or restaurant, where attendees meet key decision makers including financiers, surveyors, lawyers, architects, developers and contractors, to name just a few.”

ESI Ltd, a Shrewsbury based, environmental consultancy has agreed to sponsor the Shropshire Curry Club. Andrew Singleton, land group director at ESI, said: “ESI provides specialist services to the property and affiliated business sectors and after making some excellent industry contacts and generating business opportunities by attending the Chester Curry Club we decided to sponsor the Shropshire event. It is a unique and proven idea where professionals can develop property related contacts in an informal environment and I believe the only one of its kind in the county.”

The first Shropshire Curry Club will take place on Wednesday 09 May at Panacea in Shrewsbury (located next to Montgomery’s Tower). Networking will start with drinks at 12 noon followed by lunch at 1pm.  The cost is £20.
